This sandstone formation called Checkerboard Mesa forms part of the spectacular cliffs within Zion National Park.
As you can see, there are two sets of lines that form the checkerboard pattern.
The horizontal lines are layers of wind-blown sand that accumulated into sand dunes.
Over time these dunes were buried and the sand grains glued together by calcite and iron oxyde to form sandstone.
The vertical lines were formed from stress and erosion on the rock surface.
The Checkerboard Mesa is situated on Scenic Byway 9 at the east entrance to Zion National Park.
